Figure 21—Interlude

“High Hopes” is a keyboard-driven song for sure, and nary a guitar is heard for over two minutes. Though the song is in the key of C minor, there’s an abrupt key change to E minor at the interlude, which sounds almost like a funeral procession. Wielding an uncharacteristic nylon-string acoustic, Gilmour plays a slow, deliberate, ascending melody (E–FA–G–B) from the E minor scale up the D string on each Em chord (measures 1–2, 5–6, 9–10, and 13–14) and answers with Gtr. 2 (another nylon-string), playing various fills from F Lydian (F–G–A–B–C–D–E) over the F chords (measures 3–4, 7–8, and 11–12). In measures 10–11, Gtr. 2 begins harmonizing in 3rds above Gtr. 1 (repeated in measures 14–15), which provides an extra bit of ear candy. Notice how, in the second and fourth phrases, Gilmour delays resolution to the F chord by lingering on the bright B and G notes, which function as the B11th and 9th and really highlight the Lydian flavor. On beat 3 of measure 16, we move to a Gsus4 chord, which becomes the (suspended) V chord of the C minor harmony at the beginning of the forthcoming verse (not shown).
